Want to know the process of Safflower farming?
Safflower is renowned as Khusambha and Kusum and is the oldest cultivated oilseed. It contains 24 to 36 % oil, which is primarily used in cooking. We can also use the rest of the decorticated cake to feed our animals. Therefore, it is very profitable farming if you cultivate it for commercial purposes. The yield rate is also reasonable in this farming. So, if you want to grow it commercially, you should stay with this blog. After taking all the information from this, you can easily cultivate it. Also, you can ensure a high yield.
For this farming, you should take care of some farming requirements. So, you can easily get high production and a healthy yield.
Methods and Requirements of Safflower Farming
To grow a healthy yield, you should consider some farming requirements. These tips can ensure the maximise production from your crop.
Climate Requirement
For Safflower cultivation, the ideal temperature is 15 to 20°C. And for the sowing time, the temperature must be between 15 to 18°C. It will give the perfect germination to the seeds. Apart from this, the rainfall from 60 to 90cm is suitable for safflower farming. In the end, you should harvest the crop at 32 to 35°C temperature.
Soil Requirement
A maximum variety of soil is sound for safflower cultivation. But the best-suited soil for this cultivation is drained sandy loam soil. Also, it can give high results in the soil with rich organic matter. So, arrange a test for your farm’s soil to know is it suitable for this farming or not.
Popular Varieties
The Safflower has some varieties, which are grown in different places across India. The varieties are DSH-129, MKH-11, NARI-NH-1 (PH- 6), Parbhani Kusuma (PBNS-12), Phulekusum, NARI-H-15 and NARI-6.
Land Preparation
You should plough the land several times to take the soil to its acceptable tilth level. It removes the weeds available in the field from the last crop season. In addition, you should make the field free from waterlogged conditions as the waterlogged conditions can harm the flowers and wilts as well as the roots of the crop. You should also use a good tractor fitted with high-quality tractor tyres like BKT Tractor Tyre and more. It can increase your tractor’s efficiency.
Sowing
The optimum time for sowing operations is from the last week of October to the first week of November. The plant to plant space must be 15 cm, and for a row to row, it must be 45 cm. Therefore, the 5 to 7 cm sowing depth is suitable for this farming. In addition, the drilling method is sound for safflower farming.
Seed Rate & Requirement
You should use 6 Kg seeds per acre. Also, you should treat the seeds before sowing with Captan or Agrosan GN @ 3 gm/kg. And healthy seeds must be soaked in water for a night for excellent germination.
Crop Rotation
You can rotate the safflower crop with mash, maise, fodder, moong and others. It can be helpful for the better growth of the crop.
Weed Control
Safflower crops can not bear the weeds in the field. So, we have to keep the area free from weeds. You can do weeding operations 25 to 30 days and 45 to 50 days after sowing. So, you can plough the field with the help of good tractor models. The front tyres are also essential for the tractor’s efficiency. So, always use good quality front tyres like JK Tractor Front Tyre and others.
Irrigation
Even if you can grow this crop in these areas, where the soil is moist, irrigation is not required. However, one irrigation is good in 30 days for a better yield during the flowering stage. For the areas where the soil is not moist, give heavy pre-sowing irrigation. It can help the crop for better production.
Pests and Their Control
The pests can harm the crops. So, you have to control them as soon as possible. So, let’s see what can we do to control pests.
Green peach aphid: It can harm the crop rapidly.
Safflower aphid: It can make the plant weak or can dry up.
You should control them by spraying 100 ml Chlorpyriphos 20EC in 100 ltr of water/acre. Then, you can repeat them in 15 days if required.
Disease and Its Control
The disease can spread around all the corps. So, you should treat the crop with some chemicals to free up the illness.
Wilt and heat rot: In this disease, the plant turns yellow and finally dies. To control it, you should use disease-free and healthy seeds.
Harvesting
In 150 to 180 days, safflower matures to harvest. So, you should reap the crop in mid-May when flowers turn yellow.
