7 strategies for students in digital classrooms to improve their learning
The rising digitization and adoption of remote learning in several institutes is encouraging them to conduct online lectures and classes. Further, there are several organizations offering e-learning courses and certification programs to interested students to gain new skills and certificates with the help of e-learning software.
Many students have been facing problems with online education in terms of understanding the teachers or facing technical issues like internet connectivity or lack of proper e-learning software equipment. Additionally, students also have trouble learning through videos and PowerPoint presentations interpreted by faculty members in classrooms.
A large aspect of e-learning is self-motivation to come back to attending the lectures every day, study through the syllabus and give better learning outcomes.
Hence, here are a few ways in which the students can focus on enhancing their learning in digital classrooms & improving learning outcomes.
Working in groups-
When the student is studying in a traditional classroom, there are several other students around them doing the same work which motivates them to do so. However, in online classrooms, the student is attending classes with e-learning software at their home, most probably on their beds which makes them isolated. Therefore, it is important that students and their fellow students are involved in the learning process and work on projects, which gives a sense of group learning. This increases students’ motivation to learn.
Further, conducting group activities and collaborations on projects and assignments can further help them to improve their learning outcomes. In this way, they won’t feel that they are studying alone during the classes and would be completely involved in them. Also, the students will be able to make friends as they do in institutes and classrooms and share their knowledge, thereby increasing the overall learning outcomes and student’s interest in the subjects.
Such activities also help in the development of skills such as working in a group and making friends, leading people and others which might take a back seat if the education is completely remote from the beginning.
Create a working environment-
Remote learning conducted via e-learning software cuts down the limitations of physical locations for education. Hence, the students that enroll in these courses or classes can take them from wherever they are. However, this also gives them a provision to take classes from their beds, while sleeping, or doing other activities which will cause disturbances in learning. Hence, the student should create a proper workspace with a table and chair, keeping their back straight throughout the class so that they do not feel sleepy or distracted during the class. Attending the class sitting on the bed will tempt them to lean on it and then slowly go to sleep.
Further, if the environment is noisy and disturbing, the student won’t be able to sit for the class and concentrate. Hence, it is important to have an active environment with fresh air, no noises, better light, and not concentrate on anything other than learning.
Take notes during the lectures-
Even if online class providers offer a variety of notes and learning materials for students, it is an advantage that students continue to take notes on what the teacher teaches or what is reproduced in the videos during the lecture. This will help them keep track of the topics that they have understood. Further, it will be easier for the students to learn from those notes during the exams, understand the concepts, and also share them with other students. An efficient e-learning software implementation can boost the process & help students attain the best learning outcomes.
Interact with the teachers for doubts-
Even if the classroom is online and lectures are digital, the teacher is ready to help you in the same way as the traditional classrooms. The online mode is likely to create a physical barrier among the students and teachers as they are not in the same room. However, the role of the teacher in a student’s education to guide and support does not take a back seat here.
Likely, the teacher might not be able to personally lookout for all the students, but the students can always go to the teacher and ask for doubts, or discuss the problems that they might be facing. This helps in making the process easier for both.
Create a schedule-
Sometimes the students get the freedom of completing the course according to their own will. You will receive flexibility in terms of time and number of study times.
In both cases, creating schedules for studying or writing assignments according to the class timings will help the students to finish the tasks in time and to stay productive. It will reduce the chances of procrastination and improve the productivity of the students during the lectures.
Record the lectures-
The major advantage of online learning is that the lectures conducted by the teachers can be recorded and heard later by the student. Hence, if the student is absent for some time for the lecture, he or she should take responsibility for hearing the recordings and then asking the teachers if they are facing any doubts.
Ensure proper working of equipment-
Make sure the laptop is working properly, is well charged, and has all the basic applications needed for online training. Moreover, make sure that the internet connection is available or contact the concerned person before the class. This helps the student concentrate on the lectures without any external disturbances.
Due to the deadly COVID19 pandemic, the institutes had to temporarily close, leaving them with no choice but to take digital classes and other activities such as exams.
As a result, students have little choice but to adapt and study, even if the transition from traditional classrooms to online education is vast.
The implementation of learning management systems or e-learning software helps the students in a better way through the online modes of education. Also, the rising technological advancements are bringing innovations in the systems making e-learning more convenient for the students.
