How to score 80+ in PTE in 7 days!! For australia education and PR, by A One Australia Education Group.
This article is for those who want to score as many marks as possible in PTE without any lectures or tuition. I scored 80+ last year and I didn’t follow any coaching options, only self study and practice tests. So basically this guide may help you to save a lot of money on tuition fees. Actually I didn’t opt for coaching because there is a big risk involved: your preparation time could go down by 1-2 months if you attend classes and also teachers give the same topics everyday so no point attending classes from day 1. You may learn something new from the internet that the teacher teaches the next day which means wasting a day.
I will cover 3 important sections in this article: study tips, test analysis and how many PTEs I should take to land a job.
PTEs are called language tests for IELTS/TOEFL takers. I wrote an article about pronunciation before which is very helpful in PTEs, you can check it here .
Before studying anything first u need to know the types of questions that are asked in PTE exams:
1) Reading comprehension (30-38 qns):
basic reading comprehension will be asked but sometimes pc may contain passages with extra explanation added to understand the text better.
2) Executive summary (16-20 qns):
few questions will be asked from the given executive summary.
3) Vocabulary and general knowledge (5-8 qns): very basic or sometimes very quirky vocabulary based or gk questions may be there.
4) Paired passage:
2 passages will be provided with a gap in between, questions will come from both these passages.
5) Grammar/punctuation:
a sentence might have a mistake which needs to be fixed.
6) Odd sentence out:
a sentence might not make sense, u need to find the odd one among the four options.
7) Spelling (1 qn):
any word can appear as an option for this type of question.
8) Fill in the blanks (1 qn):
a passage will be given and some of the sentences will have missing words, which need to be filled up.
9) Cause and effect:
cause and effect type questions might come from this section.
10) Odd one out (1-2 qns):
based on similar things or concepts there might be an odd one among four options.
11) Sentence correction (3 qns):
a direct or inverted question can appear in this segment or sometimes there might not be any direct question but only 2 choices like “A or B” etc., correct answer will always be A for such types of questions, though u may get it wrong .
12) Summary completion –
short type (2 qns): a part of a paragraph will be given out and there may be 5-6 sentences to fill up the blanks.
13) Critical reasoning:
this section is quite easy for non-natives but can be tricky as well.
14) Reading comprehension:
passages will be followed by 2 questions each, except the last one which may come with 3 options.
15) Deductive reasoning:
logic problems/ puzzles etc., will appear in this type of section only . 15a) Puzzle case study : direct questions from puzzle solving activities i.e., puzzles or any other logical question types can also come from this section, though it won’t be much repetitive.
16 Couplet completion:
a sentence/phrase is given with a word or a number blanks. The student has to find 2 words from the 4-5 given for each blank which can complete the sentence in the best possible way.
17) Sentence arrangement:
In this section, students have to arrange 5 sentences into meaningful order .
18) Classification:
Questions based on making 3 logical divisions of items according to some criteria may come from this section . Initially it may carry low weightage, but eventually it will get tougher and take up the majority of the CAT exam.
19a) Data interpretation:
a set of tables and graphs with data points may be provided and the test taker should make an inference about them based on what he knows about the particular subject matter.
19b) Data representation:
Set of diagrams, charts and graphs with data points may be provided and test takers have to decipher the pattern based on what is already known about the particular subject they are dealing with.
20a) Static questions:
The graph or chart shown in this section will be stationary in nature. It will not talk about any trend between variables.
20b) Dynamic questions:
The graph or chart shown in this section will be dynamic in nature unlike static questions above which are not concerned with time sequence. It will tend to discuss the trends that exist between different variables .
21) Two dimensional geometry:
Questions related to geometry can come from two dimensions only! They may be further classified as line geometry / plane geometry
22) Trigonometry:
Questions related to this section are expected to be very rare, if not non-existent.
23a) Quadratic equations :
You can expect very difficult questions on Quadratic Equations in the CAT exam. The problems should involve solving them both algebraically and using numerical techniques like “Roots”.
23b) Problems involving quadratic equations with no solutions! This is again a very specialist realm which you cannot assume will come from anywhere except from this section. As there may not be any ‘Easy’ question that is expected here, students who want to attempt them must have sound knowledge of these topics.
24) Inequalities :
Inequalities have also been problematic in the past. Proof by Contradiction, linear inequalities and simultaneous inequalities can be considered.
25) Probability :
This section is somewhat trickier than the others mentioned above because it involves several very advanced topics like Theorems of total probability, Complementary events etc that are not expected to come from any other section at all!
26) Sets :
General sets, subsets and basic operations on sets are expected questions here. Students should at least know definitions of basic sets like Venn diagrams before attempting these questions.
27) Mixtures and Allegations :
Although questions may appear trivial or easy, students should not consider them so. Even seemingly straightforward problems involving allegations (like A must be false but B may be true or both A and B may be true) can be tricky to some students.
28) Linear Equations in Two Variables :
This section contains a lot of easy problems, but some questions may appear more complex than they actually are! Students should not rush through them and answer obviously right answers wrong simply because the question seemed a bit too easy. At least a couple of steps should be taken before deciding if an answer is right or wrong. Some students tend to get lost when it comes to solving equations involving fractions containing unknown variables, so caution must be observed while working on such problems. In fact , some students become downright sloppy with their work when two variables are involved in an equation (for example, getting rid of one variable by adding something to both sides of the equation). They forget that just because their homework looks clean and done, it’s not necessarily correct.
