The first piece of advice we can give you is to act immediately on the stain before it dries: it will be easier to eliminate it and you will not have the problem of odour on blankets and mattresses.

Especially in the case of children or the elderly, check the state of the mattress upon awakening to be able to treat the stains immediately.

In the case of still damp stains, Hobart Clean Masters advise you to proceed with drying the mattress with a soft cloth, dabbing the affected parts to remove as much liquid as possible.

After this first phase, it is important to treat the stain with a detergent, or alternatively a natural solution, for the removal of the halo and the elimination of odours, especially in the case of adults.

Only then can you proceed with drying, leaving the mattress in the sun if the weather permits it or with a hairdryer, for example in winter.

There are several remedies to clean the mattress from the pee of the child, the adult or the pets. From specific detergents to do-it-yourself solutions.

Bicarbonate to remove pee stains

Bicarbonate is one of the most effective allies for cleaning the mattress, not only in the case of pee stains: because in addition to cleaning the fabric it has a disinfecting power and is effective in removing the smell of pee from the mattress.

After the stain is dry, you can coat the affected area with a layer of baking soda and leave it on for half a day. After the necessary time has elapsed, you can remove the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner.

You can also use baking soda diluted in warm water and rub the stain until the halo has disappeared. Then air the mattress and let it dry in the sun or with the bedroom windows open.

We suggest you use baking soda especially if you want to remove pee stains from a latex mattress because it does not stain further and does not have a corrosive effect on latex foam.

White vinegar against urine stains on the mattress

We had already seen that it is possible to clean the mattress with natural methods. White vinegar is also a valid natural solution to clean the mattress from pee because it effectively removes odours and halos.

You can use it in a solution with water, the important thing is that they are in equal parts: dab it with a cloth or spray it on the stain.

This solution is also perfect in combination with the bicarbonate cover that we saw in the previous paragraph.

Dish or laundry detergent to remove stains and pet odour from the mattress

If you don’t have baking soda or vinegar at home, you can use the detergent you use for your laundry or dishes. We advise you not to apply it directly on the stain, especially if it is coloured, but to dilute it with water and treat the mattress using a damp cloth.

To prevent the detergent from settling, leaving other marks or affecting the mattress cover, rinse the affected area with a clean cloth soaked in water.

At the end of the treatment, let the mattress dry in the sun or use a hairdryer.
